One Year Ago - Part 11a

Welcome to Maui, the best island in the world! That's what they claim anyway. We spent three and a half days on this island and two of those days were free days. No, we didn't get to drive the road to Hana, but we did many other things. The picture above is of sugar cane fields. I would like to be there when they burn them off to harvest it.

We began our day by going to Haleakala National Park, try saying that one! It is a dormant volcano. Take a look at the road above. It was that way for most of the trip to the top (37 miles), above the clouds and beautiful weather. We got up there just in time before the clouds rolled into the crater. We could see Mauna Kea mountain on the Big Island from the top, over 80 miles away. Our bus driver was great and very interesting! They say that the best time to be up top is at sunrise. When the sun hits the volcanic cinder and ash, it looks like sparkeling diamonds.
The silver sword plant, only grows in Maui and in the park. It blooms in the summer and then dies. The stalk can grow up to two meters and have 40 outlaying ray flowers and 600 disk flowers. This one is in the infancy stage. The one beside it is the skeleton, how it looks after blooming. We saw some others that were also skeletons.
Above the clouds and great views!
Loved this sign and it was so true! It was windy and chilly up there!
The crater at the top and the cinder cones can reach up to 800 feet. It is 6.99 miles across, 2 miles wide, and approx. 2,600 deep.

Entrance to the visitor's center.
Another view of the crater.
Couldn't resist taking this picture! The neat part about the language is that the vowels always stay the same and each one is always pronounced and as far as I can remember, there are only 12 consonants and the 5 vowels.
