One Year Ago - Part 6

We had a free morning on this day. This picture was taken from our balcony. The pink hotel is the world famous Sheraton on Waikiki. The picture below was taken looking east toward the city and mountains. After lunch, we loaded onto a bus and went to the Polynesian Culture Center.

The Polynesian Culture Center is managed by the Mormons who also have a college on the grounds. Students come from all over the Pacific islands and some from the US mainland. The Center covers the following cultures: Hawaii, Tahiti, Aotearoa, Tonga, Marquesas, Rapanui, Samoa, and Fiji all on 42 acres. The students from the college are tour guides, canoe guides, and they do the show at night. Each place listed above has it's own village that you can visit and learn about their culture. They also have demonstrations that include: basket weaving, climbing coconut trees, performances of their songs and chants, etc. We watched the canoe competition first before walking around. Each country did a demonstration that included song and dance while riding on a canoe with a flat top.

We took this canoe ride and our guide was a riot! They sure do have the humor over there! The next few pictures are of the Horizons show. By this time it was dark and a nice breeze was blowing. It was an interesting show! All countries were color coded so that you would know who was performing.

This was the grand finale of the show.
