One Year Ago - Part 9a

We flew to the Big Island (named Hawaii and the biggest island, thus referred to as the Big Island)on this day. I thought this was great poster/map of Hawaii. It was hanging in the Honolulu airport on the wall between the restrooms. It was big! Every time we went to the next island, we had to fly back into Honolulu and then catch the next flight to the next island. That made for six flights while we were there. They say that you can't fly island to island anymore except in certain cases. That meant some early mornings for us! We flew on Aloha Airlines, and they went out of business about two weeks after we came back.

Snow in Hawaii? Absolutely! I had a window seat on the flight to the Big Island. This mountain is Mauna Kea at 13, 796 feet.

Rainbow Falls on the Wailuku River outside of the city of Hilo. The water/mist wasn't quite at the right angle for us to see a rainbow, but it was still beautiful!

My sister and me.

This was a neat place and it is now owned/operated by the Hershey Co. The entrance road took us through the groves of macadamia trees. Had to buy some, of course!

After climbing the steps, there were videos playing up there telling all about the factory. When we looked through the windows, we could see it all in operation.
The next few pictures are of the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. What's there to say except that they were gorgeous! I only posted a select few, but there were so many varieties that it made my brain spin.

After visiting the orchids, we headed to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There was a lot of activity at the time, so the air quality was very poor and it was very hazy and hard to see. Some of the roads were shut down which was a disappointment, but better safe than sorry.

This picture is a small glimpse of the Kilauea Caldera. Notice the hazy sky. This volcanic area is the most active on earth. Lava flows somewhere all the time. About 2-3 weeks after we came home, this area where we had been standing, blew up and then had to be closed for awhile. Like I said before, lots of activity all the time. There were signs posted outside warning you not to be outside for long periods of time due to the poor air quality. Smelled like sulfur. I was sad that we couldn't go to the end of the road to see the lava flows, but oh, well. I guess that means that we'll have to go back some day.
